Ivane Abashidze: Anaklia port will support Middle Corridor cargo growth

The first dredging vessel has entered the marine area of Anaklia Deep Sea Port, marking the start of a new stage in the project's construction, Report's Georgian bureau informs.

Ivane Abashidze, director of Georgia's Maritime Transport Agency, said this.

According to him, after the procedures required by law are completed, the dredging vessel Tristao Da Cunha will begin deepening the seabed for the construction of the breakwater channel.

Abashidze said the first dredging vessel currently at the port will mainly carry out work in the breakwater area. In the coming weeks, it will be joined by a second floating unit, which will deepen the port's entrance channel and inner water area.

According to the agency head, cargo turnover at Georgian ports has increased significantly in recent years, and the capacity of existing ports is almost fully used.

He said the launch of Anaklia Deep Sea Port will make an important contribution to increasing cargo transportation along the Middle Corridor, which connects Central Asia, other parts of Asia and Europe.

Under the project, the seabed will be deepened to 17.5 meters. At the next stage, a 1,380-meter-long breakwater will be built. The work is continuing according to the previously approved schedule.
