Haaretz: Israel to gain nothing from recognizing 'Armenian Genocide'

Israel chose the wrong moment to recognize the "Armenian genocide," and the country stands to gain nothing from this decision, Report informs referring to Haaretz, citing a diplomatic source.

The publication notes that this decision (by the Israeli government - ed.) was made at a time when Armenia is attempting to normalize relations with Türkiye and Azerbaijan. According to the Israeli diplomatic source, Israel stands to gain nothing from this decision.

The article notes that the reaction of most Armenians to Israel's decisions was mixed.

"However, most of Armenia reacted quite differently to Israel's announcement. On social media, reactions ranged from questioning Israel's motives to open and explicit mockery of its attempt to "atone for its sins" through the recognition.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's response was also cool.

Israel's decision to recognize the "Armenian genocide" was made out of the blue, and, as far as we know, without any consultation with the Republic of Armenia or professional staff at his ministry. The recognition came after long decades of Jerusalem blocking official recognition attempts, right when Armenia is in the middle of normalizing relations with its two historical rivals, Azerbaijan and Türkiye," reads the article.

The author notes that Baku was also surprised by Israel's decision: "It seems that Azerbaijan wasn't taken into account when the decision was made. Despite close Israeli-Azerbaijani relations and extensive cooperation over arms, intelligence, oil, and gas, as far as we know, Azerbaijan wasn't informed before the declaration was made. It responded with a harsh statement, calling the announcement "unacceptable" and calling on the Israeli government to "reconsider this decision."
