The Telegraph: Nearly 90% of British voters oppose recognition of Palestine

Nearly 90% of Britons do not support the UK government's upcoming decision to recognize Palestinian statehood.

According to Report, citing The Daily Telegraph, a public opinion survey conducted by JL Partners between August 19 and 31 and involving 2,118 respondents, found that 87% opposed the unconditional recognition of a Palestinian state. Only 13% supported such an approach. Among supporters of the ruling Labour Party, just 11% approved of Prime Minister Keir Starmer"s planned move. Support was even lower among backers of the opposition Conservative Party (6%) and the right-wing populist Reform UK party (8%).

The survey also revealed that 51% of respondents opposed recognition of Palestine as long as the radical group Hamas remains in power. Another 40% said such a step should be conditional on Hamas agreeing to a ceasefire and releasing Israeli hostages. Additionally, 17% were against any recognition of Palestinian statehood under any circumstances.

According to the BBC and Sky News, Starmer is expected to announce the recognition of Palestinian statehood on September 21. Critics argue that this decision would undermine the UK's ability to influence both Israel and Hamas.
