Media: Cholera affected 96% of Yemen

Cholera cases are being recorded en masse across 96% of Yemen amid strikes by the United States and its allies and the cessation of humanitarian aid, Report informs, referring to The Washington Post (WP) citing doctors and experts.

According to the deputy head of the World Health Organization representative office in Yemen, Nuha Mahmoud, this cholera outbreak "remains the worst in the world."

The specialist noted that from January to mid-July, 50,000 suspected cases of infection were identified in Yemen and 149 deaths were recorded. As the newspaper notes, airstrikes on medical facilities are greatly complicating the provision of assistance to the sick and wounded.

In addition, the Trump administration has reduced the amount of aid to Yemen, which has led to a shortage of medicines and medical equipment.

Because of this, more than a third of all hospitals in Yemen have ceased operations.

According to the UN, about 80% of the country's population depends on foreign aid and more than half of this aid came from the United States. The newspaper reports that the destroyed infrastructure and lack of medicines lead to the fact that even easily treatable cases of cholera in normal conditions become deadly.

As The Washington Post notes, the largest cholera outbreak in modern history occurred in Yemen from 2016 to 2022.

At that time, about 2.5 million suspected cases of cholera were registered in the country.

Cholera is a particularly dangerous infectious disease caused by cholera vibrios. It occurs when the pathogen enters the body with contaminated food or water.
