US Vice President JD Vance is currently holding talks in Islamabad with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Report informs, citing Al Jazeera.
On February 28, the United States and Israel launched military operations against Iran, carrying out airstrikes on several cities. On the same day, Iran's Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, was killed in the strikes. In response, Iran launched missile attacks on Israeli territory and targeted US military bases in Gulf countries.
Iran, the United States, and their allies reached a two-week ceasefire agreement overnight on April 8, 2026.
Talks between the United States and Iran in Islamabad are expected to begin after 17:00 local time (16:00 Baku time (GMT+4)).
Key issues in the US-Iran negotiations include a cessation of hostilities, sanctions policy, and control over the region's strategic waterways.
Tehran insists that dialogue can begin only if a ceasefire is implemented in Lebanon and some sanctions are lifted, while Washington is prepared to discuss easing restrictions only in exchange for Iranian concessions on its nuclear and missile programs.
The sides also remain divided over the status of the Strait of Hormuz: Iran demands effective control and the right to charge transit fees, whereas the United States insists on full openness for international shipping.
In addition, Tehran is raising the issue of unfreezing its assets and seeking compensation for damages caused by the conflict.
Iran is also calling for the withdrawal of US forces from the Middle East and security guarantees against future attacks. The administration of President Donald Trump, however, is open to maintaining a military presence until a comprehensive agreement is reached and does not rule out escalation if the talks fail.
