EU weighs whether to hold summit with UK after Starmer resignation

The European Union is considering whether it is appropriate to hold the EU-UK summit scheduled for July 22 after British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced his resignation.

Report's European bureau informs that European Commission spokesperson Paula Pinho said this at a briefing in Brussels.

According to her, the European Commission is holding consultations with European Council President Antonio Costa and the British side on the summit, the date of which was announced last week. However, she did not specify whether the meeting would be postponed or canceled, saying only that discussions were ongoing.

Pinho also stressed that European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen highly appreciated Starmer's contribution to strengthening the security of Europe and Ukraine.

"Our relations with Britain are strong and will remain so," she said.

Keir Starmer resigned as UK prime minister on June 22. His decision has raised questions about the timing of a number of international events, including the planned summit between the European Union and the United Kingdom.
