ASWRA: Azerbaijan plans large-scale measures to reduce water losses

Azerbaijan will implement large-scale measures to reduce water losses, build new reservoirs, and promote water reuse, Zaur Mikayilov, Chairman of the Azerbaijan State Water Resources Agency (ASWRA), said at Baku Climate Action Week 2025 (BCAW2025), Report informs.

Mikayilov noted that major programs will be launched in the coming years to reduce losses in drinking water and irrigation networks: "Projects will include the design of new reservoirs, pilot initiatives for water reuse, and desalination. These efforts could serve not only Azerbaijan but also the wider region as a model."

The chairman emphasized that all these projects are guided by a unified principle: "Water policy is climate policy. If we act with discipline and ambition, Azerbaijan can become a regional model of water resilience-where people have access to safe drinking water, efficient irrigation is practiced, rivers run clean, and the economy grows within the limits of nature."
