The State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) is implementing artificial intelligence-based solutions to analyze large volumes of data obtained during methane emissions monitoring, Hikmat Abdullayev, Deputy of SOCAR Vice President, said at a panel discussion held within the 31st International Caspian Oil and Gas Exhibition at the Baku Expo Center, Report informs.
Abdullayev noted that for companies operating across the entire oil and gas value chain and covering wide geographies, measurement, monitoring, and the detection of new leaks are the most important stages in the process of reducing emissions.
"Over the past 18 months, our measurement programs have generated a huge amount of data. It was difficult to analyze this data quickly and draw conclusions. To solve this problem, the company developed an artificial intelligence tool for data processing and analysis. We applied the AI solution for data analysis and switched to digital approaches. The key point was that the results obtained from the measurement program were directly integrated into the asset maintenance program," he said.
The official also pointed out that this approach allows maintenance programs to focus on areas where emissions and leaks are most frequently observed: "In many cases, eliminating leaks does not require complex technological intervention. It is enough to identify the source of the leak and eliminate it. In this way, the priorities of the existing maintenance program are changed without attracting additional resources. Coordinating measurement programs with maintenance activities is a practical, simple, and economically efficient approach."
