UNEP chief: Azerbaijan playing important role in global climate action

Azerbaijan plays a key role in climate action at the global, regional, and national levels, Inger Andersen, executive director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), said at an event marking World Environment Day on June 5, organized by Azerbaijan in partnership with UNEP, Report informs.

Recalling that Azerbaijan hosted COP29, she noted that, thanks to the strong leadership demonstrated by President Ilham Aliyev, important commitments and results were achieved: "The climate talks held in Baku in 2024 resulted in the world agreeing to mobilize $300 billion in climate finance by 2035. Last month, Baku also hosted the World Urban Forum (WUF13). The event highlighted the need to strengthen climate resilience in countries around the world."

Andersen also emphasized that every country in the world is vulnerable to climate change: "This shouldn't fill us with despair. We should write our own history and slow climate change. If we take action now, we can prevent millions of deaths and risks by 2050."
