15 historical monuments in Shusha to undergo conservation in 2026

In 2026, conservation work will be carried out on 15 historical monuments in Shusha, Aydin Karimov, Special Representative of the President of Azerbaijan in the Shusha district, said during the event themed Post-Conflict Urban Planning: Restoring Destroyed Identity and Rebuilding an Integrated Future held at the Azerbaijan Pavilion within the 13th Session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13), Report informs.

According to him, extensive reconstruction has been underway in Karabakh and East Zangazur over the past five years, and the process continues rapidly:

"Immediately after Shusha was liberated, restoration and construction works began in the city. Not only Shusha but all liberated territories suffered unimaginable destruction during the occupation. Shusha, in particular, and its cultural heritage were severely damaged. More than 100 monuments, mosques, and other historical, religious, and cultural buildings were destroyed."

Karimov stressed that this was the result of a deliberate policy during the occupation: "So far, 27 historical monuments, 5 mosques, 1 church, the House Museum of Bulbul, and the monument to Uzeyir Hajibayli have been restored in Shusha. Today, tourists visiting the city can clearly see the difference between the occupation period and the current situation."

He added that this year, conservation work will begin on 15 more historical monuments in Shusha.
