Azerbaijan's Presidential Special Representative for Climate Issues, Mukhtar Babayev, has emphasized the need for monitoring mechanisms to ensure countries fulfill the commitments made at COP29 and previous UN climate summits.
Speaking to Report, Babayev stated, "Many decisions were adopted at COP29. We are determined to hold all countries accountable for implementing these decisions, as well as those from earlier COPs. This remains a serious challenge as some countries make pledges but fail to follow through. To ensure compliance, proper monitoring is essential."
He noted that Azerbaijan's COP29 team has been actively working throughout the year and will continue its efforts until it hands over the presidency to Brazil at COP30.
"As part of preparations for COP30, we are continuing our activities in various countries. We must pass on both leadership and the legacy of COP29," Babayev said.
He added that Azerbaijan's COP29 team will be represented at several key events, including the Pre-COP conference in Brazil, and preparatory meetings organized by Canada and China in Belém. COP30 will officially begin in Brazil this November, with the leaders' summit scheduled for November 10.
