Mosque in Giyasly village of Aghdam restored with preservation of its original appearance

The historic mosque in the village of Giyasly in the Aghdam district has been restored with the preservation of its original appearance, Elvin Aslanov, a representative of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, told Report's correspondent in Aghdam.

According to him, archival materials were used during the restoration process.

He recalled that President Ilham Aliyev visited the Giyasly mosque during his trip to Aghdam on May 28, 2021.

It was emphasized that the Giyasly mosque was one of the historical and religious monuments of Karabakh that suffered from Armenian vandalism. During the occupation of the Aghdam district by Armenian armed forces, the mosque building was severely damaged — its roof and domes were completely destroyed, and it was used as a cattle shed.

After the liberation of the Aghdam district from Armenian occupation, restoration work on the Giyasly mosque began in 2022, led by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation. To preserve the mosque’s original appearance, archival materials and video sources were used in the design of the restoration project. A preserved spiral staircase in the interior indicated the historical presence of two minarets on the southern side of the mosque. In accordance with tradition, the minarets were rebuilt on the southern side.

With the help of specialized equipment, the leaning stone columns were restored, stone arches and domes were rebuilt, and damaged walls with flaking plaster were repaired. The mihrab, which had fallen into disrepair, was also restored. The façade stones were cleaned with special chemicals, and the joints between the old stones were cleared. Auxiliary buildings were constructed around the mosque.

By a resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Azerbaijan, the Giyasly mosque was included in the list of immovable monuments of local historical and cultural significance in 2001.

It is worth noting that on July 18, President Ilham Aliyev took part in the inauguration of the restored historical mosque in the village of Giyasly, Aghdam district.
