Japanese MFA: Russia occupied South Kuril Islands

The Japanese Foreign Ministry Department Director Hideki Uyama said that the southern Kuril Islands are occupied by Russia, Report informs.

He expressed that this occupation contradicts international law, as does the ongoing Russian army attack on Ukraine.

Negotiations between Moscow and Tokyo on the ownership of the islands of Iturup, Kunashir, and Shikotan have been going on since the middle of the last century.

The southern group of the Kuril Islands is located in northern Japan.
