US President Donald Trump has informed his aides that he does not consider it a problem if negotiations with Iran extend beyond the 60-day deadline set by the memorandum of understanding, Report informs referring to The Wall Street Journal.
According to the publication, Trump held several meetings in recent days with US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Dan Caine, during which the possibility of resuming military action against Iran was discussed.
As noted by the WSJ, the American leader concluded that a new large-scale military operation may undermine diplomatic efforts and reduce Washington's chances of achieving the dismantling of the Iranian nuclear program. However, Trump has not yet made a final decision on this matter.
According to the newspaper, the president also told aides that he would not object if negotiations on the nuclear deal continued beyond the August 18 deadline stipulated by the memorandum.
Furthermore, in an effort to reduce tensions, the US has taken steps to establish a communications channel between the US Central Command (CENTCOM) and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to resolve potential crises.
According to WSJ sources, some US officials view this initiative as evidence of improved relations between Washington and Tehran, while others believe the project is only in the initial stages of implementation. A White House spokesperson told the publication that the communications channel has already been established and is being used by both sides.
For his part, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei stated on June 30 that contacts between Tehran and Washington are conducted through political, not military, channels.
