The Council of the European Union has decided to end the partial suspension of the EU–Syria Cooperation Agreement that was introduced in 2011 in response to the repressive policies of the regime of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
According to Report's European bureau, the EU Council explained its decision by stating that following the fall of the Assad regime in December 2024 and the subsequent lifting of most economic sanctions in May 2025, "the conditions that justified the suspension no longer exist."
The decision is being viewed as part of the EU's broader policy aimed at supporting Syria"s political transition and economic recovery.
Brussels described the move as "an important step toward strengthening bilateral relations between the EU and Syria."
The partial suspension of the Cooperation Agreement between the European Union and Syria had restricted imports of several Syrian goods, including oil, precious metals, and diamonds.
