Zaur Mikayilov: Azerbaijan's freshwater reserves have declined

Over the past 40–45 years, Azerbaijan's freshwater reserves have decreased by 25%, Zaur Mikayilov, Chairman of the State Agency for Water Resources of Azerbaijan, said at Baku Climate Action Week (BCAW2025).

According to Report, he noted that since the 1980s, the Caspian Sea level has dropped by almost two meters, and the water volume in the Kura River has decreased by roughly the same amount.

"This is clear evidence of climate change in our region. Against the backdrop of shrinking water resources, losses in drinking water supply and irrigation systems remain high. Only one-third of the population has access to modern wastewater disposal services," he said.
