Today, more than 2.8 billion people worldwide lack adequate housing, and over 1 billion live in informal settlements and slums, Aziza Akhmouch, a representative of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), said at an event during the 13th session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13) in Baku, Report informs.
According to her, the housing crisis today is not only a social issue, but also an economic and climate issue.
"This is not just a social issue. It is also an economic issue, a climate resilience issue, and ultimately a question of democratic trust, which underpins the social contract," Aziza Ahmoush emphasized.
She noted that both in OECD countries and beyond, people are increasingly expressing concerns about housing affordability.
"About one in two people fear they won't be able to afford adequate housing in the near future. From a political perspective, this is a very clear warning signal that governments cannot ignore," said the OECD spokesperson.
