Mukhtar Babayev: Climate issues still relevant

Although climate issues are no longer considered as high a priority globally as before, they remain highly relevant, said Mukhtar Babayev, COP29 President and Representative of the President of Azerbaijan on Climate Issues, Report informs.

Speaking at the opening of the 20th Baku Summer Energy School, organized by ADA University's Institute for Development and Diplomacy, Babayev noted that heatwaves in Europe and other regions remind us that climate change is rapidly continuing: "Unfortunately, the frequency of natural disasters, heatwaves, floods, droughts, and other hydrometeorological events is increasing."

He stressed that energy security and crises have become central topics on the global agenda: "Recent events have shown how urgent and dangerous the energy crisis is worldwide. At COP28, nuclear energy was recognized as a safe energy source, increasing interest in this field. This summer, heatwaves in Europe, falling river levels, and difficulties in cooling systems caused energy production at nuclear power plants to drop by more than 10%."
