Azerbaijan is turning the Caspian region into the main logistics center of the Middle Corridor, said Nijat Asgarov, Director of the International Transportation Department of the Absheron Logistics Center, at an event held in Baku titled "Caspian and Central Asia - refining, petrochemicals, trading and logistics", Report informs.
Nijat Asgarov noted that logistics is one of the most important driving forces of economic development today: "The key to success in modern economy lies precisely in the efficient management of logistics. In the 1870s, the world's first successful oil tanker was put into operation in Baku, and crude oil was transported to Astrakhan via the Caspian Sea. The Baku-Sabunchu-Surakhani railway line, which transported oil from the Absheron peninsula to factories, was the world's first transportation system using tank platforms."
According to him, today the Caspian region requires harmonization of the interests of five countries - Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Russia and Iran: "Modernization of ports, simplification of procedures and attraction of investors are turning the Caspian into the main link of the Middle Corridor."
Nijat Asgarov noted that Azerbaijan is moving beyond being just a transit point to become a logistics center that creates added value: "The model we have established at the Absheron dry port is not limited to just warehousing and loading-unloading. It will offer services such as consolidation, packaging, repackaging, labeling, light manufacturing, and even storage of products within the terminal."
