China plans to invest about 2 trillion yuan (approximately $295 billion) over the next five years to build a nationwide network of data centers.
According to Report, citing Bloomberg and sources familiar with the matter, the initiative is aimed at accelerating the development of China's domestic artificial intelligence industry and helping the country gain an edge over the United States in one of the most strategically important technologies of the future.
Sources said key government agencies, including China's National Development and Reform Commission, are developing a plan to establish a network of interconnected computing centers across the country.
The plan envisages that at least 80% of the technologies used, including AI chips, will be supplied by Chinese manufacturers such as Huawei. Authorities hope the move will significantly reduce dependence on US firms NVIDIA and AMD.
The project is considered Beijing"s most ambitious effort yet to build the infrastructure needed for the future development of artificial intelligence. It mirrors earlier state-backed initiatives designed to support national technology champions, including Huawei, and replace U.S. technologies with domestically developed alternatives.
