The European Union is intensifying efforts to overcome the housing crisis, focusing on international cooperation and systemic reforms in the area of affordable housing, Ambassador of the EU to Azerbaijan, Marijana Kujundzic, said at a ministerial roundtable during the Baku Urban Forum (WUF13), Report informs.
The diplomat emphasized that the availability of affordable and quality housing is a fundamental condition for the sustainable development of any society.
"When people are homeless or their housing is unsafe, it becomes a serious challenge for the entire society. Housing should be viewed as a fundamental human right, not a commodity," the head of the diplomatic mission stated.
The ambassador added that there is no universal solution to the housing crisis, as each country faces its own specific challenges, requiring localized approaches.
At the same time, the European Union has already taken concrete institutional steps, including the appointment of the first Housing Commissioner and the creation of a special task force.
Kujundzic also noted that the European Commission has presented an affordable housing plan, including measures to increase supply, invest, promote reforms, and protect vulnerable groups.
She noted that the plan's implementation has already begun, and the continued rise in housing prices makes the issue particularly relevant.
