ICMP chief says Azerbaijan's forensic capabilities are at a high level

The capabilities of forensic medical expertise in Azerbaijan are at a high level, Kathryne Bomberger, Director-General of the International Commission on Missing Persons (ICMP), told journalists during an international conference in Baku dedicated to the issue of missing persons.

According to Report, she noted that the ICMP is ready to support Azerbaijan in further strengthening its forensic capabilities:

"There are still a large number of cases related to missing persons. We hope that our work in supporting both Azerbaijan and Armenia will ultimately help families find closure," she said.

Bomberger also highlighted the importance of continued cooperation between the two countries, expressing optimism about progress in the peace process.

"Article 9 of the peace agreement initialed by the two countries is notably detailed. The parties undertake to address the issue of persons who went missing or were subjected to enforced disappearance during the armed conflict involving both sides, including through the exchange of all available information on such persons, either directly or in cooperation with relevant international organizations.

The parties recognize the importance of establishing the fate of these individuals, including the search for and return of their remains, where necessary, and ensuring justice through appropriate investigations as a means of promoting reconciliation and building confidence. The specific procedures for implementing these commitments will be set out in a separate agreement."
