Hikmat Hajiyev, Assistant to the President of Azerbaijan and Head of the Foreign Policy Affairs Department of the Presidential Administration, has stated that some countries are obstructing the full functioning of the UN Committee on Decolonization.
According to Report, speaking at the General Assembly of the Global South NGO Platform, Hajiyev said countries of the Global South have historically suffered greatly from colonialism and neocolonialism, and the issue remains relevant today.
"This is a scar on the face of humanity. But has it been left in the past? Unfortunately, these practices continue today, taking on new forms and manifestations on the global stage," he stressed.
The presidential aide recalled that during Azerbaijan"s chairmanship of the Non-Aligned Movement in 2019–2022, the fight against neocolonialism was one of its priorities.
"We also regret to note that the UN Committee on Decolonization is still unable to fully carry out its mandate, as some countries resist the decolonization process," Hajiyev said.
