The UK government intends to actively promote lasting peace and development in the South Caucasus region, UK Ambassador to Baku Fergus Auld said at the First Azerbaijan-UK Policy Dialogue, Report informs.
The diplomat noted that during his three years in Azerbaijan, since August 2022, he has witnessed historic events: the full restoration of the country's territorial integrity, the early withdrawal of the Russian peacekeeping contingent in April 2024, the recent initialing of the peace agreement with Armenia, and the dissolution of the Minsk Group.
He emphasized that he has witnessed progress, from the initial stages of demining and early reconstruction in Gubadli, Jabrayil, and Zangilan to large-scale restoration in Shusha and Lachin, which he visited several weeks ago, as well as the launch of flights to Fuzuli and the restoration of rail service in Aghdam.
Fergus Auld emphasized the significance of the COP29 conference held in Azerbaijan, which became the largest international event in the country's history and attracted over 50,000 foreign guests.
Speaking about the development of bilateral relations, he noted the positive dynamics: the first-ever visit of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer to Azerbaijan, the appointment of the first British military attaché, participation in the Intergovernmental Commission on Energy, and the visit of Minister for Europe Stephen Doughty.
"The UK is closely following developments in the region and is committed to contributing to building peace and prosperity. But most of all, I am proud that, as Ambassador here, I was able to help my country stand with Azerbaijan in achieving the success of COP29," he concluded.
