Azerbaijani, Romanian lawmakers discuss stronger ties

A working meeting was held at the Romanian Senate between Azerbaijani parliamentary delegation members led by Deputy Speaker of the Milli Majlis Ziyafat Asgarov and members of the Romania-Azerbaijan friendship group headed by Marian Neacsu, Report informs.

Neacsu warmly recalled his visit to Azerbaijan in February 2023 as part of a Romanian parliamentary delegation led by the speaker of parliament. He noted that the peoples of Azerbaijan and Romania are united by shared values such as hospitality and kindness.

According to him, mutual visits over the years by presidents, prime ministers, and parliamentary speakers demonstrate the growing development of bilateral relations.

Neacsu described the appointment of senior government and parliamentary officials as heads of the Azerbaijan friendship group in the Romanian parliament as a sign of importance Romania's attaching to relations with Azerbaijan. He also stressed the need to expand transport, energy, and trade cooperation in light of the current geopolitical situation in the region.

Deputy Speaker Ziyafat Asgarov stated that the Azerbaijani people hold great respect for Romania and the Romanian people, emphasizing that traditional friendship and strategic partnership relations between the two countries continue successfully.

He also thanked the Romanian state and Senate leadership for supporting a conference held at the Romanian Senate dedicated to the role of National Leader Heydar Aliyev in Azerbaijan-Romania relations on the occasion of the 103rd anniversary of his birth, as well as for honoring his memory.

Romanian MP Adrian Solomon, a member of the friendship group, recalled his first visit to Azerbaijan"s liberated territories in 2022 together with fellow lawmaker Amet Varol. He said the rapid implementation of infrastructure projects in the region had impressed him, noting in particular that Fuzuli International Airport, built and launched within months, could serve as an example for Romania"s aviation sector.

The chairman of the Azerbaijan-Romania friendship group at the Milli Majlis, Azay Guliyev, highlighted the importance of developing interparliamentary relations, expanding cooperation between friendship groups on international platforms, and strengthening mutual ties.

During the meeting, Neacsu reaffirmed continued support for the development of Romania-Azerbaijan relations both within parliamentary cooperation and through the Social Democratic Party, which he represents.

In addition, the Azerbaijani delegation led by Ziyafat Asgarov visited the bust of National Leader Heydar Aliyev at Tei Park in Bucharest on May 12. Participants honored his memory and laid flowers at the monument.
