Funke Media Group publisher urges ban on social media, smartphones for under-16s over AI risks

Children are among the most vulnerable groups to the potential risks associated with artificial intelligence (AI), Julia Becker, Chair of the Funke Media Group Supervisory Board, said, according to Report's correspondent, covering the European Publishing Congress 2025 in Vienna.

As one of the protective measures against AI-related threats, Becker proposed banning the use of social media platforms for children under the age of 16.

“In the European Union, for example, there are numerous restrictions on various topics, yet the use of smartphones and social media by children remains largely unregulated. This poses significant risks. We must seriously consider the option of a complete ban on smartphones and social networks for minors. Australia, for instance, has already introduced restrictions on social media access for those under 16. Closed groups appear online where children may be encouraged to engage in dangerous activities, including tasks that can lead to suicide. All of this demands strict and timely regulation,” Becker emphasized.

She also highlighted another growing threat: children increasingly interact with AI through messaging platforms such as WhatsApp.

“Children are now frequently communicating with chatbots, creating AI-generated photos and videos, which are then shared within closed groups. This, too, presents certain dangers and requires attention from both adults and regulatory authorities,” she added.
