Simon Stiell: COP29 promises must be translated into concrete action

The climate promises made at the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) in Baku must be translated into concrete actions, Simon Stiell, executive secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, said in a video address at the Climate Action Week in Baku, Report informs.

He stated that last year's global experience, when agreement on a new global policy was reached at COP29, demonstrated that progress is possible when governments, businesses, and civil society act together and decisively.

"The priority must be to transform national climate plans into actionable projects capable of attracting both public and private financing. This requires policy and business strategy alignment, which will create a predictable environment and ensure the scalability of climate solutions," he said.

He noted that success depends on two key factors: the formation of project portfolios that align with national priorities and business interests, and the development of partnerships that combine public and private investment with innovation and technology.

"We must strengthen trust and cooperation. Governments must create transparent and predictable conditions that reduce risks for investors, and businesses must not only invest capital but also provide technology and expertise to accelerate solutions," the Executive Secretary emphasized.

According to him, the Climate Action Week in Baku is dedicated to precisely this.

"The world is moving from promises to projects and actions. It's about demonstrating that climate action is not a cost, but a path to stronger economies, more resilient societies, and a safer world," the statement reads.
