Peter (Pete) Brian Hegseth is an American statesman, combat veteran, bestselling author, and former television commentator. Since January 25, 2025, he has held the top post in the US defense establishment within the Donald Trump administration. Notably, in September 2025, the US Department of Defense was officially renamed, and today Hegseth holds the historic title of US Secretary of War.

In early March 2026, against the backdrop of the unprecedented US-Israeli military operation in Iran ("Operation Epic Fury"), the 45-year-old Hegseth found himself at the epicenter of global geopolitics. Report.az presents an analytical portrait of the official who is radically changing the face of the American armed forces.

Military Experience and Media Career

Pete Hegseth was born on June 6, 1980, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He received a brilliant education in the humanities and politics at Princeton and Harvard universities.

His career uniquely combines real combat experience with a massive media footprint:

Military Service: As an infantry officer in the US Army National Guard, Hegseth served at Guantanamo Bay (Cuba) and participated in combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. For his service, he was awarded two Bronze Star Medals and the Combat Infantryman Badge (CIB).

Media and Politics: Prior to his appointment to Trump's cabinet, Hegseth worked for a decade as a political commentator and host on the conservative Fox News channel. He is also known as the author of the bestseller The War on Warriors (2024), in which he harshly criticized the introduction of "woke" ideology and political correctness into the military ranks.

Radical Reforms at the Pentagon (2025–2026)

Becoming Secretary in early 2025 (after a difficult Senate confirmation process where Vice President JD Vance had to cast the tie-breaking vote), Hegseth immediately embarked on tough structural reforms aimed at reviving the "warrior culture":

Personnel Purges: He dismissed a number of high-ranking military lawyers and dismantled mechanisms that, in his view, overly restricted the freedom of action of soldiers in combat situations for the sake of unnecessary civilian norms.

Budget Optimization: In February 2025, he mandated an 8% annual reduction in the Pentagon's bureaucratic budget over five years, redirecting funds toward the procurement of tangible weapons and technologies.

Historic Renaming: In September 2025, the department was officially renamed the Department of War—a move designed to signal the US shift toward a more pragmatic, tough, and uncompromising military doctrine.

Hegseth and the Iranian Crisis (March 2026)

The most serious test for Pete Hegseth has been the massive escalation in the Middle East. Starting on February 28, 2026, the US, in conjunction with Israel, launched an unprecedented air operation against Iranian military and nuclear facilities.

At a special briefing on March 2, 2026, Hegseth set a harsh tone for the entire campaign, rejecting criticism regarding the lack of a clear timeline for withdrawing forces. He emphasized that Washington would no longer engage in "democracy building":

"This is not Iraq. This is not an endless war... There will be no stupid rules of engagement, no nation-building, no politically correct wars. We fight to win, and we do not waste time and lives."

According to the Secretary of War, the operation is aimed exclusively at protecting US interests and eliminating the threat of Iran's ballistic and nuclear arsenal. "We didn't start this war, but under President Trump, we will end it," Hegseth concluded.
