Israel Katz is a veteran of Israeli politics, a member of the Likud party, and the current Minister of Defense of Israel. Having assumed the post in November 2024 following the dismissal of Yoav Gallant, Katz has, by March 2026, become the primary civilian leader of an unprecedented military campaign against Iran and its regional proxies. His leadership style is defined by extreme toughness, a total rejection of compromise, and a drive to radically redraw the security borders of the State of Israel.

Chief Strategist of the War with Iran (February – March 2026)

Under the direct supervision of Israel Katz and IDF Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir, Operation "Roaring Lion" was planned and executed.

Key achievements and statements by Katz during the conflict:

Intensity of Strikes: On March 25, 2026, Katz officially confirmed that the Israeli Air Force had dropped over 15,000 munitions on targets across Iran. This is four times the scale of 2025's Operation "Judah's Shield."

Elimination of Leadership: It was Katz who sanctioned the strikes on "decision-making centers" in Tehran. On March 17, he announced the elimination of Ali Larijani (Head of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council) and Gholamreza Soleimani (Commander of the Basij).

Ultimatum to Leaders: In early March, Katz stated: "Any new leader of Iran will be a target for elimination—regardless of their name or their location."

New Doctrine in Lebanon: "The Zone to the Litani River"

On March 24, 2026, Israel Katz made a historic announcement that fundamentally shifted the course of the conflict on the northern front. He declared full Israeli military control over Southern Lebanon up to the Litani River (approximately 10% of Lebanese territory).

Katz’s core tenets regarding Lebanon:

Buffer Zone: Katz justified the occupation as a necessary "defensive barrier" to eliminate rocket fire into Northern Israel.

The "Clear Field" Principle: The Minister proclaimed a harsh standard: "Where there is terrorism and rockets, there will be no homes and no residents—there will only be the army."

Infrastructure Destruction: Under his orders, all bridges over the Litani River were destroyed to completely isolate Southern Lebanon from Beirut.

Area of Responsibility Current Status (March 2026) Gaza Strip Support for indefinite military presence and expansion of "security zones." Iran Expansion of the target list to include Tehran's government and industrial infrastructure. Southern Lebanon Transition from raids to full-scale occupation up to the Litani River. Syria Maintaining control over border districts "for an indefinite period."

Political Weight and Future

Within Israel, Israel Katz is viewed as one of Benjamin Netanyahu’s most loyal allies, representing the furthest right wing of the security cabinet. His actions in 2026 find strong support among nationalist forces calling for the annexation of territories (a move supported by Bezalel Smotrich), but draw sharp criticism from the UN and human rights organizations (such as HRW) for "openly disregarding international norms."

Conclusion

By the end of March 2026, Israel Katz has solidified his role as the Minister of "Total War." His strategy is aimed not merely at deterring enemies, but at the physical destruction of Iran’s military potential and the creation of new territorial realities on the borders with Lebanon and Gaza.
