Turkmenistan to host high-level ecology meeting on Caspian in Oct. 2026

Turkmenistan's President Serdar Berdimuhamedov has announced plans to hold a high-level meeting on Caspian Sea ecology in early October 2026, Report informs via Turkmen outlets.

Berdimuhamedov made the statement during the plenary session of the Regional Ecological Summit in Astana.

He emphasized that the upcoming meeting should mark a new stage of cooperation among Caspian littoral states in ensuring ecological welfare and protecting the sea's unique natural environment.

Berdimuhamedov stressed Turkmenistan's active role in advancing the international ecological agenda as a Caspian state. He recalled that Turkmenistan had introduced a Caspian ecological initiative at the UN, prepared its implementation concept, and shared it with all littoral countries.

He also proposed the creation of a specialized regional council on water use. The new body is expected to operate under UN auspices and serve as a key mechanism for coordinating Central Asian countries' efforts in water resource management.

The council's main task would be to establish an effective system for managing transboundary waters based on principles of fair and rational distribution.
