Pashinyan says Armenia not ready for EU candidate status

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has said his country is currently not ready to receive candidate status for joining the European Union (EU).

Report informs that he made the remarks at a briefing broadcast by local TV channels.

According to the prime minister, a referendum is possible only when there is a concrete basis - when an official application for EU membership or candidate status is submitted.

"Armenia must at least formally apply for EU membership or have candidate status. At present, neither exists because we are objectively not ready," Pashinyan said. He added that the country needs reforms.

The prime minister also emphasized that Yerevan intends to accelerate the reform process.

According to Pashinyan, Armenia cannot be deprived of its membership in the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), as decisions within the organization are made by consensus and the country has veto power.
