In the future, Azerbaijan plans to significantly expand electricity generation from geothermal sources, SOCAR Vice President Afgan Isayev said during the inaugural Azerbaijan International Investment Forum (AIIF 2025).
Report quotes him as saying that while the development of onshore wind and solar energy is already underway, there remain numerous opportunities for potential investments and projects.
"Azerbaijan's strategic location allows us to act as a conduit, effectively transmitting ‘green electrons' from Central Asia to Türkiye and Europe. We have only just scratched the surface, and there is still tremendous potential ahead. For example, we are beginning to explore offshore development. Offshore wind is already progressing, solar is in development, but offshore has yet to be tapped and holds enormous potential. The Caspian Sea and our territorial waters represent approximately 157 gigawatts of potential in this area," Isayev said.
The Vice President also highlighted that geothermal energy has not yet been utilized.
"We have begun engaging with some of our partners, and in the future, much more will be done in generating electricity from geothermal sources, as well as electricity for heating. There is significant potential there as well. Let's also talk about pumped-storage hydroelectric plants. They also offer great prospects, especially in the liberated territories. There are countless opportunities," Isayev added.
