UNHCR urges Afghanistan’s neighboring countries not to close borders

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has called on Afghanistan’s neighbor countries not to close their borders to Afghans seeking refuge from the fighting, Report informs referring to TASS.
Global Spokesperson for UNHCR Shabia Mantoo said at a briefing in Geneva on August 13 that around 400,000 people had to flee their homes since the beginning of this year.
UNHCR calls on neighboring countries to keep their borders open in light of the escalating crisis in Afghanistan, she said.
About 400,000 civilians have been displaced from their homes since the beginning of this year, she noted, reminding that as of the end of 2020, there were 2.9 million internally displaced persons in the country.
