Sweden refuses to ban Quran burnings

The Swedish authorities do not plan to follow Denmark in banning the burning of religious books, as this would require amendments to the kingdom’s constitution, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said, Report informs referring to gazeta.ru.

On August 25, Minister of Justice of Denmark Peter Hummelgaard said that the government plans to ban the burning of religious books.

“Each country exposed to acute threats chooses its own way of dealing with them,” the Swedish prime minister said.

At the same time, he stressed that he had great respect for the decision of Denmark, but following its example for Sweden would mean amending the constitution, so this is not the most suitable way for the kingdom.

On June 28, the Stockholm police authorized a demonstration with the burning of the Quran next to the mosque.

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said the decision was ‘legal but inappropriate.’

On the first day of the Muslim holiday Eid al-Adha, a man tore out pages from the Quran, wiped his shoes with them and set them on fire. At the same time, about 200 people watched the action.
