Serbia sends firefighters, helicopter to aid Spain wildfire battle

Serbia has dispatched a helicopter and a firefighting and rescue team to Spain to assist efforts to contain the devastating wildfires that have been raging for several days, Report informs via Tanjug.

The deployment includes a firefighting helicopter along with several fire engines and crews of firefighter-rescuers.

The Serbian helicopter will be assigned to the most critical wildfire zones, primarily in the provinces of Ávila, Madrid, Toledo, and Castellón. The fire engines and their crews will join the operations upon arriving in the affected areas.

Serbia's assistance is being provided through the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism, which has coordinated international support for Spain. Greece, Italy, Portugal, and Türkiye have also contributed aid under the mechanism.

Spain has remained under a state of emergency for six days due to severe wildfires west of Madrid. Fueled by extreme heat across Europe, the fires have already affected more than 27,000 hectares. Local officials have warned that the region is facing "the worst wildfires in its history."
