EU summons Russian diplomat over Romanian airspace violation

The European External Action Service, EEAS, on Monday, July 28, summoned Russia's chargé d'affaires ad interim to the EU in response to a violation of Romanian airspace by Russian drones and a strike on Latvia's honorary consulate in Ukraine, Report's European bureau informs.

Anouar El Anouni, a spokesperson for the EU foreign policy service, made the remarks at a briefing in Brussels.

"Today, we summoned Russia's chargé d'affaires ad interim to the EEAS," he said, adding that the Russian side was handed a strong protest over the "deliberate violation of Romania's airspace by Russian drones."

According to him, such actions represent a "serious escalation" and threaten the security of EU citizens, regional stability and international peace.

Brussels also reaffirmed its "full solidarity and support" for Romania and Latvia.

The EU foreign policy service will continue supporting Ukraine and increasing pressure on Moscow, El Anouni said. He recalled that EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas had already presented a new proposal to further strengthen the sanctions regime against Russia.
