Colombian Foreign Ministry rejects attempts of foreign interference in election process

Colombia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued an official statement on June 5 expressing its rejection of attempts at foreign interference in the country's electoral process and voicing "deep concern" over such actions.

According to Report, citing Colombia's Foreign Ministry, the document reiterates the government's commitment to the principles of international law, the Charter of the United Nations, and democratic values.

The ministry emphasized that decisions regarding the country's political future "belong solely to the Colombian people" and are determined through free, sovereign, and democratic voting. It also stated that any statements or actions by foreign actors aimed at supporting or undermining candidates or political projects are considered "unacceptable interference" in Colombia's internal affairs.

At the same time, the Colombian government stressed the importance of ensuring that the electoral process is conducted without any external interference that could affect the rule of law, institutional impartiality, or public trust in election results.

The statement further reaffirmed support for democracy, respect for the independence of electoral institutions, and the principle of sovereign equality of states enshrined in the UN Charter.

The Foreign Ministry also highlighted the strength and stability of Colombia's institutions, as well as the ability of the Colombian people to freely determine their political future without external pressure and in accordance with the rule of law.

In conclusion, the government called on international actors to act "cautiously and responsibly" during the ongoing presidential election process, in line with the principles of self-determination of peoples, non-interference in internal affairs, and sovereign equality of states.
