At least 23 people died in floods due to heavy downpours and subsequent water discharge from dams in the last few days, ANI agency reports.
"Large parts of Purba and Paschim Bardhaman, Paschim Medinipur, Hooghly, Howrah, South 24 Parganas, and Birbhum districts have been flooded," the agency says.
Report informs, citing TASS, that the population of these regions is provided with emergency assistance, local authorities say.
The rescue operations in the disaster-hit areas involve divisions of land forces and combat helicopters. The rescuers primarily work in the Hooghly roundabout, where the rivers flooded most villages and 4,000 hectares of agricultural crops.
