Zaur Mikayilov: Water policy is a responsibility of both the state and society

Azerbaijan"s water policy is based on strategic principles, and the adopted National Water Strategy sets clear goals for the coming decades, Zaur Mikayilov, Chairman of the State Agency for Water Resources of Azerbaijan (ADSEA), said during a panel discussion at the 2nd International Exhibition and Conference on Water Management, Baku Water Week.

Report quotes him as saying the strategy provides for equitable and rational management of water resources, modernization of infrastructure, application of digital technologies, development of alternative and sustainable water sources, as well as strengthening science, innovation, and international cooperation.

"Large-scale projects are being implemented in this direction, including the construction of new reservoirs, renovation of irrigation systems, and improvement of drinking water supply in cities and villages. Water balance, consumption, and losses are monitored in real time through digital management platforms. Special attention is paid to alternative water sources, rainwater harvesting, promotion of water reuse, and the application of desalination technologies," he said.

Mikayilov also emphasized that through cooperation with international organizations, Azerbaijan contributes to combating climate change and achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

"Water policy is the responsibility of society as a whole, not just the state. Every citizen, enterprise, and farm can be part of this leadership by conserving water and using it responsibly," Mikayilov added.
