WUF13 recognizes utility providers as independent stakeholders for first time

For the first time, utility service providers have been recognized as a distinct stakeholder group within the World Urban Forum (WUF), said Anacláudia Rossbach, Executive Director of UN‑Habitat, during the Global Water Operators' Partnerships Alliance (GWOPA) Assembly at the 13th Session of the WUF (WUF13) in Baku, Report informs.

Rossbach emphasized the growing role of water and sanitation operators in shaping urbanization, climate, and sustainable development policies: "This week in Baku, the voices of utility providers are being heard more widely on the urbanization platform."

She noted that building cities requires more than infrastructure investment alone: "Change will come from utility institutions, governments, and partners. Investment must go not only into infrastructure but also into capacity development. Strong operators, supportive policies, and long‑term partnerships are essential for delivering sustainable services."
