Uzbek lawmaker: Incomplete consideration of mountain areas limits their potential

The future of mountain settlements is being shaped by climate change and human economic activity, member of the Legislative Chamber of Uzbekistan's Oliy Majlis Boriy Alikhanov said during the Interparliamentary Assembly of the CIS member states held within the framework of WUF13 in Baku.

According to Report, Boriy Alikhanov stressed the need to forecast the possible use of mountain natural resources in the short and medium term while taking into account the impact of climate change on the region's environment.

He noted that the need to find the most effective and well-grounded solutions for the use of ecosystem resources is linked to the limited mountain resources of Central Asia amid steadily growing consumption levels.

In addition, the lawmaker stated that insufficient consideration of the natural and socio-economic characteristics of mountainous territories hampers the development of an effective strategy for utilizing their potential.

Alikhanov emphasized that anthropogenic pressure on mountain areas in Central Asia has already exceeded acceptable limits, leading to environmental degradation.

According to him, the management and use of natural resources in mountainous regions are still largely based on outdated approaches and principles.

He also added that the region makes insufficient use of the centuries-old traditions and environmental practices developed by peoples living in mountain areas.
