UN-Habitat: Community-oriented project underway in Brazil

A community-oriented project is being implemented in Brazil's Rio de Janeiro state, prepared based on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the principles of the New Urban Agenda, said Rayne Ferretti Moraes, UN-Habitat's Head for Brazil, during the event under the theme Bridges for Cooperation: In Search of Best Solutions for Sustainable Housing and Resilient Cities – Voices from Cities held within the 13th Session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13) in Baku, Report informs.

According to her, the project is funded by the local government and implemented in partnership with UN-Habitat.

"The project is organized along 3 main directions. The first direction is called Informed Rio. Here, the main focus is on data collection, analysis, preparation of indicators, and compilation of reports. The second direction is called Sustainable and Resilient Rio, and here activities related to the 2030 Agenda, climate change, and sustainability are carried out. The third direction is focused on the community. Within this framework, work is conducted with youth, women, girls, and community representatives. The project covers 92 municipalities of the state of Rio de Janeiro."

Moraes added that under the Informed Rio component, UN-Habitat's Nairobi headquarters developed a city monitoring framework based on global indicators and data systems: "Together with the Governor of Rio state, UN-Habitat and United Cities and Local Governments prepared a Portuguese-language guideline version of the methodology. Currently, we are preparing Voluntary Local Reviews for 17 municipalities in the Coleste region and for the entire Rio de Janeiro state."
