Mara Cossu: Localization of SDGs mustn't remain just a concept

It is necessary to move beyond considering the localization of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as merely a general concept, said Mara Cossu, Head of the Sustainable Development Unit at the Directorate for European and International Affairs and Sustainable Finance of Italy's Ministry of Environment and Energy Security, Report informs.

Speaking during the event under the theme National Frameworks for Localizing SDGs held within the 13th Session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13) in Baku, she stressed that the issue is not about preparing another document:

"The main goal is to ensure that localization of SDGs becomes a priority in negotiations this year and in the years ahead, including the post-2030 period. We need shared tools, approaches, and common messages. Italy will participate in the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) this year, presenting both our voluntary national review and voluntary local review. The connection and interdependence between national and local reviews are crucial. This is the key to turning SDG implementation into a driving force for change at the local level."

Cossu highlighted the importance of developing shared tools that take into account the characteristics of different contexts: "We are working with you to create common tools to address critical challenges in diverse contexts. Considering the specific features and priorities of each context is vital in designing such shared instruments. Therefore, national SDG localization frameworks are designed in different modes. We invest heavily in cooperation beyond political cycles, believing that this type of institutional collaboration can also strengthen trust at the local level. When institutions work together for change, it helps engage local communities in tackling these challenges."
