The modernization of the Baku–Tbilisi–Kars (BTK) railway line will significantly enhance the capacity of the Middle Corridor, Bakhtiyar Hajiyev, Head of Public Relations at the Communications Department of Azerbaijan Railways (ADY), told journalists in Georgia, Report informs.
Hajiyev mentioned that the BTK railway line is one of the most important segments of the Middle Corridor passing through Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Türkiye: "In recent years, the growing volume of freight along the corridor has made it necessary to expand the line's capacity. For this purpose, Azerbaijan Railways carried out large-scale modernization works on the Georgian section of the line in 2023–2024. As a result, the annual freight capacity of the BTK line increased from 1 million tons to 5 million tons."
According to Hajiyev, on June 2, a ceremony will be held at Georgia's Akhaltsikhe railway and logistics complex to mark the commissioning of the BTK line after modernization: "This event shows that the project has entered a new stage. Full-scale operation of the BTK line will further increase freight traffic along the Middle Corridor, expand trade relations between Asia and Europe, and strengthen the region's transit potential. The BTK railway line is currently one of the most strategically important transport routes in the region."
