Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev's speech at the UN General Assembly was significant and contained very important messages, Stéphane Dujarric, spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, told Report.
He noted that Azerbaijan's participation in the UN High-Level Week at the head of state level is an indicator of the importance President Ilham Aliyev attaches to the UN: "Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev's speech at the UN General Assembly was significant and contained very important messages. Every time a country elevates its representation from prime minister or foreign minister to the head of state level, it demonstrates how important the UN is to that country and how important that country is to the UN."
Dujarric also noted Secretary-General Antonio Guterres' meeting with President Ilham Aliyev and the issues discussed: "Azerbaijan hosted the last climate summit, COP29. It has been a key partner in UN efforts. Azerbaijan has also been a significant supporter of multilateral diplomacy for many years. Naturally, during his meeting with President Aliyev, the Secretary-General emphasized the achievements in ending the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan. This creates hope for other regional conflicts. The Secretary-General noted that he will do everything possible to continue peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan for the sake of the peoples of both countries and the entire region. This was one of the topics of their discussions."
The secretary-general's representative emphasized that Azerbaijan is one of the most successful members of the UN: "Azerbaijan has made significant contributions to multilateral diplomacy through its successful chairmanship of the Non-Aligned Movement and the significant results achieved at COP29. Azerbaijan is now preparing to host the UN-Habitat conference in Baku in 2026. Whether it's the Non-Aligned Movement, COP meetings, or the Habitat conference, Azerbaijan continues to contribute to the work of the UN. This clearly demonstrates that Azerbaijan is part of the international community and a participant in our efforts in multilateral diplomacy."
Dujarric also touched on the priorities facing the UN during High-Level Week: "This is a very busy week, with many important events taking place. This week, we must focus on both the future and the present. By future, I mean the reform of the United Nations. Our goal is to make the UN more effective and to make it representative of the modern world, which is very different from the world of 1945. Maintaining hope for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, as well as ensuring the sustainability of resolved conflicts, such as those in Armenia and Azerbaijan, is also a crucial task."
