Slovak official warns conflicts are damaging urban infrastructure

Urban infrastructure around the world is being damaged due to ongoing military conflicts, said Deputy Prime Minister of Slovakia and Environment Minister Tomáš Taraba during the first-ever Leaders' Summit held within the 13th session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13) in Baku.

According to Report, Taraba stressed that urban policy cannot be viewed in isolation, as it is closely linked to environmental policy, energy systems, and economic resilience.

"Cities are not only centers of development; they are also systems of safety and critical infrastructure," he said, adding that Slovakia is ready to share its experience and support measures aimed at strengthening urban resilience.

He noted that sustainability today goes beyond climate adaptation, as many cities worldwide are increasingly affected by the consequences of armed conflicts.

"Infrastructure is being damaged and destroyed, essential services are disrupted, and people are forced to leave their homes," Taraba said.

He also emphasized the importance of long-term reconstruction, including the modernization and renovation of housing stock, particularly for low-income populations.

"Energy efficiency is a key challenge facing all countries today," he added.
