Azerbaijan's electricity market is currently experiencing an oversupply, which is one of the barriers to the industry's development, World Bank Senior Energy Specialist Florian Kitt said in Baku at the Azerbaijan & Central Asia Green Energy Week 2025, Report informs.
"You (Azerbaijan) already have a large amount of existing generation capacity. Therefore, it is necessary to find new consumption centers in order to build new plants using renewable energy sources. Azerbaijan recently launched a very large new gas-fired power plant. Therefore, I think the main issue is finding markets for electricity exports," Kitt noted.
He added that the industry's regulatory system must be harmonized with EU requirements to ensure electricity exports to European countries.
"In this regard, the government should be commended for seriously considering this and discussing ways to address these issues with partners, including the IEA," the expert noted.
