SOCAR searching for potential carbon storage sites in Azerbaijan

The State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) is conducting research into potential carbon storage sites within the country, Elchin Targuluyev, director of the Technology and Innovation Department at SOCAR Green, said during a panel discussion held at the 31st International Caspian Oil and Gas Exhibition in Baku, Report informs.

"In the future, we will inevitably need to master carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies. Given that SOCAR has set itself the goal of achieving net zero emissions, any oil and gas company, and indeed any enterprise whose primary activity involves emissions, will need to employ CCS or, likely, even CCUS (carbon capture, use, and storage) technologies to achieve this goal.

Even today, despite the lack of specific projects, we are studying this technology in detail. We are monitoring the latest developments in this field. Furthermore, we are analyzing potential carbon storage sites in Azerbaijan so that, should affordable technology become available, we will be fully prepared when it becomes increasingly economically feasible," the department director emphasized.
