OGCI: No emissions were recorded at most SOCAR facilities

The State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) is placing strong emphasis on international partnerships in combating climate change and is fully open to cooperation with the Oil and Gas Climate Initiative (OGCI), according to Lauren Ward, OGCI's Low Carbon Program Manager, Report informs.

Speaking on the second day of the Baku Climate Action Week (BCAW2025), Ward highlighted the expansion of OGCI"s satellite monitoring campaigns:

"We launched a pilot project in Iraq in 2021, and after its success, extended the initiative in 2022 to Kazakhstan, Algeria, and Egypt. In 2023 and 2024, we refined our approach and invited OGCI member companies to participate in selected regions voluntarily. This expanded the campaign to more than five countries, including Azerbaijan."

She noted that the campaign with SOCAR officially began in the second half of 2024 and covered seven operational sites in Azerbaijan.

"If a site is monitored and no emissions are detected, that in itself is a success. That's exactly what we achieved with SOCAR-most sites showed no detectable emissions. In cases where emissions were identified via satellite, SOCAR quickly relayed the data to their operations teams, who managed to reduce emissions to undetectable levels within a short time."

OGCI, a coalition of leading energy companies, implements global-scale programs aimed at emissions reduction and enhancing environmental sustainability.
