BP: Shah Deniz reserves could power Britain for 10 years

The reserves of the Shah Deniz field are sufficient to supply Great Britain alone with energy for ten years, BP's Regional President for Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Türkiye, Gio Cristofoli, said at the 31st Baku Energy Forum, Report informs.

Cristofoli highlighted that this is truly a pillar of energy security: "The reserves are enormous, with 28 trillion cubic feet of gas. We are, of course, continuing to invest to maximize production from these reserves. For example, we are drilling a number of wells under the program. We are also investing $2.9 billion in the installation of a compressor facility, which will be fully electrified within a month. This will be the first facility of such complexity in the Caspian. Thus, with these vast reserves, we continue to invest to maximize production from what we have."

The official stressed the importance of combining technology with the right mindset and integrating it into work processes: "Otherwise, technology alone cannot achieve much. For example, the new wells at Shah Deniz are among the most difficult in the industry to drill. Recently, we applied a technology called 'managed mud line,' where we precisely regulate the weight of the mud in the well. We ensure that the pressure does not exceed fracture pressure, otherwise all the mud would be lost into the formation. At the same time, the pressure must not be too low. The complexity of the Shah Deniz formation is such that this pressure window is very narrow. Therefore, to regulate this pressure with precision, we introduced a new technology in the Caspian for the first time."
